What You Need to Know About Porcelain Dental Veneers

When you look in your mirror, what don’t you like about your smile? Is it the chips, cracks, or fractures on your teeth? Or perhaps, it’s the gaps between your teeth? What about discolored teeth? Whatever the reason, teeth imperfections can dampen the confidence of even the most self-assured person. Fortunately, porcelain dental veneers in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, can produce dramatic results for your smile.

When you visit Kind Smiles Dental Health, Dr. Allison Konick will perform an examination to determine if dental veneers will be a good option for you.  Then, she will carefully plan and design dental veneers to reinvent your smile. Interested? … before taking the plunge, here is what you need to know about the procedure.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are wafer-thin, tooth-colored porcelain materials placed on the front of your teeth to improve function and appearance. Depending on your dental challenges, dental veneers camouflage countless dental flaws. Whether it’s uneven teeth, gaps, slight misalignment, discoloration, damage, or chipped teeth, dental veneers can help improve your smile.

Types of dental veneers

When you are a candidate for dental veneers, you are likely to get direct or indirect veneers. Below is how to differentiate the two:

  • Direct veneers: These are composite resin veneers made to match the rest of your teeth through dental bonding. Additional layers of resin can be added to add to the length of the tooth. This works best when only one or two teeth are in need of cosmetic enhancement.
  • Indirect veneers: This procedure is more common when the entire appearance of the smile is in need of improvement.   Dr. Konick will create space for thin pieces of porcelain to be bonded on the front surface of the teeth in need.  While indirect porcelain veneers address all the issues fixed by direct veneers, they have the added advantage of being stain-resistant, durable, and can closely match or improve the color of your natural teeth.

Dental Veneers Procedure

The first step for the dental veneers’ procedure is taking dental images and then discussing your goals for the procedure. Dr. Allison Konick is meticulous in showing patients a series of mock-ups (dental images) to give cues about how the end results will look. This preparation helps patients get closer to their desired results.

On the day of the procedure, Dr. Allison Konick will remove a small part of your enamel to create room for your porcelain veneers. Next, dental impressions of your prepared teeth are taken with an intraoral scanner and images are sent to the lab for the veneers to be created.  As you wait for your permanent veneers to be made, you may have temporary veneers bonded onto your teeth.

When your veneers are ready, an adhesive layer is applied to your teeth, where your veneers will be placed. Finally, your dentist uses a special light to cement your veneers in place.

After the procedure, you may experience sensitivity to hot and cold drinks. However, don’t stress out as this feeling will wear out after three to four days without any intervention.

Are you wondering how to take care of your veneers? At-home oral care that includes brushing and flossing is the best way to maintain your veneers. However, don’t forget about visiting your dentist at least twice a year. As always, to keep your teeth and/or veneers as bright as possible, it’s best to limit or steer away from stain-causing substances like tobacco, coffee, wine, and soda.
